A solid frame traces a determined path to the space supporting the large functional sitting area, and proceeding up through the backrest.
The result – Tray! Hybrid furniture, balancing between a dining chair and lounge chair, which neatly approaches the environment with its overall simplicity. Concealing its fine details to pleasantly discover over time.
An open surface for a contemporary lifestyle.
The biggest challenge has been achieving a visually clean, but still comfortable piece of furniture. Rear legs twist in order to align themselves to the backrest, making the 'T' junction with the seat braces a key and geometrically complex element, with change of axes, variable radiuses and multiple joints.
Model making is is a crucial design phase, which allows to check proportions and overall scale. Before proceeding with the a prototype, I built a full-scale cardboard mock-up.
Tray Chair has been finally showcased as part of the Fuorisalone exhibition "Ventura Lambrate", together with other emergent designers projects, during Salone del Mobile, in 2013.
